Lymphoma Treatment

Comprehensive, Targeted Care for Hodgkin & Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

From accurate staging to routine monoclonal antibody therapy and long-term follow-up, Dr. Shahzad Nasir provides comprehensive lymphoma treatment using modern protocols at IRM International Hospital, Islamabad.

What Is Lymphoma?

Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system—a vital part of your immune system comprising lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, and bone marrow. It presents in two main forms:

  • Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL): Characterized by Reed-Sternberg cells; highly curable with modern therapy
  • Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL): A diverse group of over 60 subtypes, ranging from indolent (slow-growing) to aggressive forms
Accurate diagnosis and precise subtyping are essential, as treatment varies dramatically between types.

Our Lymphoma Services

1. Expert Diagnosis & Staging

Correct treatment begins with correct diagnosis. Our workup includes:

  • Detailed history and physical examination with attention to lymph node groups, B-symptoms (fever, night sweats, weight loss), and organ involvement
  • Laboratory testing: Complete blood counts, LDH, liver and kidney function, HIV/Hepatitis screening
  • Imaging: CT, PET-CT for accurate staging (I through IV)
  • Bone marrow biopsy when indicated
  • Excisional lymph node biopsy reviewed by experienced pathologists for definitive subtyping
Staging determines whether disease is localized (early stage) or disseminated (advanced stage)—a distinction that directly shapes treatment strategy.

2. Chemotherapy & Immunotherapy Protocols

We utilize internationally recognized regimens tailored to lymphoma subtype and stage:
For Hodgkin Lymphoma:

  • ABVD (Doxorubicin, Bleomycin, Vinblastine, Dacarbazine)
  • Escalated BEACOPP for high-risk cases
  • PET-adapted therapy (de-escalation or intensification based on interim imaging)
For Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma:

  • R-CHOP and variants for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL)
  • Bendamustine-Rituximab for indolent lymphomas
  • Specialized regimens for mantle cell, Burkitt, and T-cell lymphomas
All protocols are selected based on the latest evidence and adapted to each patient’s age, organ function, and comorbidities.

3. Routine Monoclonal Antibody Therapy

Monoclonal antibodies represent one of the most important advances in lymphoma care. These targeted therapies attach to specific proteins on cancer cells, flagging them for destruction by the immune system.
At our center, we routinely administer:

  • Rituximab: Targeting CD20 on B-cell lymphomas; used in nearly all B-cell NHL and increasingly in some autoimmune contexts
  • Other monoclonal agents as indicated by subtype and availability
These therapies improve cure rates, extend remission, and are integrated seamlessly into chemotherapy backbones.

4. Long-Term Follow-Up & Survivorship Care

Lymphoma cure is only the beginning. Our survivorship program monitors for:

  • Late relapse: Particularly important for indolent lymphomas
  • Treatment late effects: Cardiac function (after anthracyclines), pulmonary function (after bleomycin), thyroid dysfunction, secondary malignancies
  • Fertility preservation outcomes for younger patients
  • Psychosocial well-being: Return to work, family life, and mental health
  • Vaccination status: Re-immunization after chemotherapy-induced immune suppression
We remain your partners in health long after active treatment concludes.
