General Hematology Consultations

Expert Diagnosis & Management of All Blood Disorders

From anemia and bleeding disorders to thrombosis and pre-operative assessments, Dr. Shahzad Nasir provides thorough, evidence-based hematology consultations at IRM International Hospital, Islamabad.

What Is Hematology?

Hematology is the medical specialty focused on diseases of the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system. Blood disorders can range from common conditions like iron-deficiency anemia to rare, life-threatening clotting or bleeding diseases. Many patients are referred to a hematologist by their primary physician after abnormal blood test results; others seek care directly for symptoms such as fatigue, bruising, or unexplained swelling.

Dr. Shahzad Nasir brings 20 years of international hematology experience to every consultation, ensuring that even non-malignant blood conditions receive the same rigorous attention as cancer care.

Our General Hematology Services

1. Anemia Evaluation & Management

Anemia—a deficiency of red blood cells or hemoglobin—is one of the most common blood disorders, yet its cause is often inadequately investigated. We do not simply prescribe iron; we determine why you are anemic.
Our evaluation includes:
  • Complete iron studies: Ferritin, serum iron, TIBC, transferrin saturation
  • Vitamin B12 and folate levels
  • Hemolysis workup: LDH, haptoglobin, reticulocyte count, direct antiglobulin test (Coombs)
  • Bone marrow examination when production failure is suspected
  • Screening for chronic disease, renal dysfunction, or occult blood loss
Treatment is tailored to the underlying cause—whether nutritional replacement, management of chronic disease, immunosuppression for autoimmune hemolysis, or transfusion support.

2. Thrombocytopenia & Bleeding Disorders

Low platelet counts and bleeding tendencies require careful differentiation between:
  • Production problems: Bone marrow failure, leukemia, chemotherapy effect
  • Destruction problems: Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), thrombotic microangiopathies (TTP/HUS/DIC)
  • Sequestration: Hypersplenism
We also evaluate inherited and acquired bleeding disorders such as:
  • Hemophilia A & B
  • von Willebrand Disease
  • Coagulation factor deficiencies
  • Platelet function disorders
Our workup includes specialized coagulation assays, mixing studies, and genetic testing where indicated.

3. Thrombosis & Hypercoagulable States

While bleeding disorders receive significant attention, abnormal clotting (thrombosis) is equally dangerous. We evaluate and manage:
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
  • Recurrent miscarriage associated with thrombophilia
  • Unprovoked or unusual-site thrombosis (suggesting an underlying disorder)
Our thrombophilia workup investigates:
  • Inherited conditions: Factor V Leiden, Prothrombin G20210A, Protein C/S deficiency, Antithrombin deficiency
  • Acquired conditions: Antiphospholipid syndrome, malignancy-associated thrombosis, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH)
We provide individualized anticoagulation plans with careful attention to drug interactions, monitoring, and duration of therapy.

4. Pre-Operative Hematology Assessments

Surgery carries inherent bleeding and clotting risks. We provide pre-operative hematology clearance including:
  • Screening for occult bleeding disorders in patients with personal or family history of abnormal bleeding
  • Management of patients on anticoagulants: Bridging therapy for warfarin, peri-procedural planning for DOACs (direct oral anticoagulants)
  • Anemia optimization: Pre-operative iron supplementation or transfusion planning to reduce post-surgical complications
  • Thromboprophylaxis planning: For high-risk surgical patients
Our goal is to ensure your hematologic status is optimized before surgery, reducing the risk of bleeding, transfusion, and post-operative thrombosis.

Book Your Hematology Consultation

Whether you have abnormal blood tests, symptoms suggesting a blood disorder, or need pre-operative clearance, Dr. Shahzad Nasir provides expert, patient-centered care.

Your first session involves a comprehensive evaluation of your medical history, symptoms, and movement patterns. The physiotherapist may conduct physical tests and discuss your goals before starting initial treatment or exercises.

In most cases, you do not need a referral to begin physiotherapy. However, some insurance providers may require one for coverage, so it’s best to check with your policy beforehand.

Yes, physiotherapy plays a crucial role in post-surgery recovery. It helps reduce pain, restore movement, and rebuild strength through tailored rehabilitation exercises. This promotes faster healing and reduces the risk of long-term complications.

Absolutely. Physiotherapy can improve joint mobility, reduce stiffness, and manage pain associated with chronic conditions like arthritis. A customized program can enhance your quality of life and keep you active.

During your first visit, we’ll begin with a detailed assessment of your condition, followed by a personalized treatment plan. You’ll also receive guidance on posture, movement, and basic exercises to manage discomfort and support your recovery journey.
