Expert Care for Acute Leukemia in Islamabad

Dr. Shahzad Nasir has treated 100+ leukemia cases over the past 4–5 years using pediatric-inspired protocols, risk-stratified AML management, and an infection control infrastructure that has achieved almost zero infection-related mortality during induction therapy.

Understanding Acute Leukemia

Acute leukemia is a rapidly progressing cancer of the blood and bone marrow that demands immediate, expert intervention. Without prompt treatment, it can become life-threatening within weeks. At our center, we recognize the urgency of this diagnosis and have built a treatment environment specifically designed to give patients the highest probability of remission and long-term survival.

Dr. Shahzad Nasir identified acute leukemia as a critical area of unmet need upon returning to Pakistan after 20 years of international practice. Today, our facility stands as one of the few centers in Islamabad offering dedicated, protocol-driven leukemia care with outcomes that meet global benchmarks.

Our Approach to Treatment

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) — Pediatric-Inspired Protocols

Historically, adult ALL patients have been treated with less intensive regimens than children, resulting in inferior outcomes. Research worldwide has shown that pediatric-inspired protocols—characterized by more intensive chemotherapy, tighter monitoring, and rigorous supportive care—produce significantly better remission and survival rates in adults.
At our center, we implement these intensified protocols adapted for adult physiology, including:
  • Multi-agent induction chemotherapy designed to achieve rapid complete remission
  • CNS prophylaxis to prevent leukemia involvement of the brain and spinal cord
  • Consolidation and delayed intensification phases to eliminate residual disease
  • Prolonged maintenance therapy to reduce relapse risk
  • Minimal residual disease (MRD) monitoring where available

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) — Risk-Stratified Treatment

Not all AML is the same. The biology of the disease varies enormously between patients. We classify every AML case based on:
  • Cytogenetic analysis (chromosomal abnormalities)
  • Molecular genetic markers (FLT3, NPM1, CEBPA, etc.)
  • Age and performance status
This allows us to assign patients to risk categories—favorable, intermediate, or adverse—and tailor treatment accordingly:
  • Favorable-risk AML: Standard intensive chemotherapy with excellent expected outcomes
  • Adverse-risk AML: Escalated therapy, early consideration for allogeneic bone marrow transplantation
  • Intermediate-risk AML: Personalized decision-making based on composite factors
This precision approach avoids undertreating aggressive disease while sparing lower-risk patients from unnecessary toxicity.

Benefits of our service

Many individuals struggle with discomfort that interferes with daily activities, work, and overall quality of life. At our physiotherapy center, we focus on helping you:

Begin Your Treatment Journey

Time is critical in acute leukemia. If you or a family member has been diagnosed—or if symptoms suggest a blood cancer—contact us immediately for an urgent evaluation.

During your first visit, we’ll begin with a detailed assessment of your condition, followed by a personalized treatment plan. You’ll also receive guidance on posture, movement, and basic exercises to manage discomfort and support your recovery journey.

Yes, physiotherapy plays a crucial role in post-surgery recovery. It helps reduce pain, restore movement, and rebuild strength through tailored rehabilitation exercises. This promotes faster healing and reduces the risk of long-term complications.

Your first session involves a comprehensive evaluation of your medical history, symptoms, and movement patterns. The physiotherapist may conduct physical tests and discuss your goals before starting initial treatment or exercises.

Results vary based on your condition, commitment, and treatment plan. Some people feel improvement after just a few sessions, while others may require several weeks for noticeable progress. Consistency is key to successful recovery.

In most cases, you do not need a referral to begin physiotherapy. However, some insurance providers may require one for coverage, so it’s best to check with your policy beforehand.
